My mom’s in town visiting and we were walking around SF when we ran into the following monkey sculpture on the sidewalk.

SF.8.14.2005 024

It was pretty amusing to me because it matches the idea behind the Simply Fired pictures of me :)

Mark, these monkey sculpture are made on famous proverb given by Mahatma Gandhi (http://www.catgen.com/home/mguthi/EN/100151.html) which reflects the advice:
    –not to see evil
    –not to hear evil
    –not speak evil.

Hi Ruchit – Ah that’s interesting. I wasn’t aware of the reference. Thanks for the tip :)

Ha, ha! You’re mom’s a good photographer. I tried researching the origin of the phrase and its meaning, but there are many different accounts. Most of the ones I’ve read trace it back to the China, though it was popularized in Japan. Definitely sounds like something my parents would say…

you have *never* heard that??? hmmm, you really do live in a cave. hehe.

anyway, I think the most famous of these monkey sculptures are, as kay suggested, at toshogu shrine in nikko, japan. I’ll show you pictures next time you come visit :)

Hehe, yeah, I think the flash/exposure/colors on that picture got a little bit weird. Too lazy to fire up Photoshop to fix :)

    Mark -
Where are these monkeys? It says “SF” in your initial email, when you and your mom “were walking around SF when we ran into the following monkey sculpture on the sidewalk.” Is this San Francisco? Can you tell me where this bench and these monkey sculptures are located?
    Thanks so much.
    Susan

Hi Susan, we saw these monkeys on Grant street, just south of Chinatown. I’m not sure if they are a permanent fixture there, or if they are owned by one of the stores in the area. Good luck!
