iPod shuffle sound quality a cut above the rest?

April 14, 2005

While browsing around, I found an audio quality test for the iPod shuffle by Bill Machrone of PC Magazine. In it, he claims that the shuffle has superior sound quality compared to most other portable music players – including other iPods. He’s even posted up detailed waveform graphs from his test to prove it.

Having taken a few EE classes during college, I know a thing or two about these graphs too (after all, I used to sit in the lab for hours generating tons of the things in Matlab). It looks like from a technical standpoint the shuffle does indeed blow away the competition. I’m anxiously waiting for an ambitious EE to take the thing apart and do an analysis on the insides – before you ask, no, you can’t use mine as a sample 😛

I also subjectively thought that the shuffle’s output sounded pretty good; guess it wasn’t buyer’s bias after all. However they did it, I’m pretty impressed.
