Google getting into IM/VoIP? Google Talk?

August 23, 2005

What’s this now? Reuters is reporting that the LA Times said Google is planning an IM system.

This has been rumored for a while now… Om suggested a VoIP spin just yesterday and everyone’s been wonding when they were going to do something with Hello (part of the Picasa acquisition?).

They say it’s built on Jabber which means it should be able to talk to ICQ and iChat. What about the other major IM services (Y!, MSN, Skype, AIM)? Why can’t they all just get along ๐Ÿ˜›

Supposedly it could be released as early as tomorrow… we’ll see ๐Ÿ™‚

UPDATE: Apparently, their Jabber server is available right now. A few people here are already playing around with IMing through talk.google.com ๐Ÿ™‚

And as Terry mentions in my comments, Jabber is an open protocol that should be able to interop with other IM networks. I can’t wait to see this client interface; I wonder if it’ll be sweet…

UPDATE 2: Dru thinks that Google will announce that they’ve bought Trillian tomorrow, but Derek in my comments points out that Download Squad has the screenshots now… thanks for the tip Derek!

Jabber has the capability to talk to Y! (Yahoo transport), MSN (MSN-t), and AIM/ICQ (AIM-t) also. The only problem is that often those services IP block popular/public jabber servers. This is why most IM clients implement their own copies of libyahoo2, libmsn, and linicq2000.

Here ya go.. Download Squad was able to get some screenshots. Decent looking interface. I’m wondering if Google sent the early release to them.

Google going the desktop now. I wonder why they cashed so much cash lately too. Maybe for the hype too. Their stock are gonna go down for sure. However, imagine if google just decide to attack the OS market. I doubt it, but that would be a fun thing to follow. Won’t it?

  4. Google talk – only for rich people? What about Win 95-98 users?

I have to say that I love the new Google Talk. I am a big Google fan, whether that makes me new friends in here or not. Google simply is the best in providing what the average person needs. Go Google ๐Ÿ™‚
