Slashdot is totally off

October 15, 2005

The fact that this article appeared on Slashdot was already bad enough, showing that the moderators over there aren’t paying enough attention. But the fact that there’s a large discussion where people are whining about how the IM networks aren’t working together while in fact MSN and Y! have just announced a federated system is priceless. Out of all over 100 comments, only a very small handful of people noted that the article was out of date. Meanwhile, everyone else simply launches on a tirade about how IRC rules or how we should band together a netizens coalition to pressure the IM networks to federate.

So I have to ask: Why did this article get modded up to the top level of Slashdot? Why has the author of this article not published an update? And what is up with the community at Slashdot not knowing what’s going on considering that the news of MSN+Y! was even mentioned on Slashdot?

No, sorry, Mark, you’ve completely missed the boat on this one.

The issue of a common, effective, and widely adopted IM standard is even more critical now after the MS/Y! announcement. That move by the two companies doesn’t do anything to make the IM world more open; if anything, it intensifies the whole walled-garden issue by pitting those two companies against AOL and/or Google and creating an even fiercer split that frustrates consumers. What you’re wrongly viewing as a success is akin to how it’d be if AT&T and Sprint decided that their long distance customers could call each other, but people using MCI and all the small players couldn’t communicate with the former group unless they procured separate phones or special phone adapters, etc…

We DO need to raise hell and insist on an open source IM communications standard, whether that’s jabber or something else. In the meantime, I hope everyone uses Trillian or GAIM, etc., until the big players compete on the value of their software instead of using their closed network “advantage” as a crutch.

Oh, and Plaxo’s integration with AIM/AOL is indeed neato, but I sure as hell won’t use AIM (beyond an occasional building of my buddy list :D) until AOL shapes up and finally ditches their walled-garden mentality once and for all.

Hmm… it is possible that it will turn into a Y!/MSN vs. AIM thing. Or it is possible that it will pressure AOL to open up their network as well and join in the fun.

And at the end of the day, I don’t care whether a network based on an open source IM communications standard. All I want is for the networks to interoperate.

So in my opinion, this is just the first step in getting fully federated IM.

  3. AOL opening up their network? MSN and Y! didn’t open up their networks, they’ve only opened it up to each other. This is most definitely not the first step to fully federated IM.

Actually, I became a lot more scared of having to live forever in a closed IM world when Yahoo and Microsoft decided to link their networks.
As long as no alliances were being formed, there was a better chance of jabber or any other open protocol for that matter being adopted. If AOL, Y!, MS and Google just decide to link to each others’ networks, no other company has a chance.

  4. I totaly agree with using open source im, just like this great website is run by an open source software like wordpress. I myself use Joomla an open source cms, and in searching for addons to ad to my website, like a forum for instance, I chose to run phpbb over vbulletin. Even though I like vbulletin better, I opt to an open source software. Commercial software is less of a headache sometimes but your imput is not reguarded and the community is nonexistent. So since open source gets better and better as its community of users grows, its important to look for it and use it.

Yes, that is a scary proposition. Get a life, dude. It’s freaking IM, for crying out loud. People are starving and dying by the millions around the world, and you’re worried about the horrors of non-interoperable IM protocols and standards inconveniencing you? Dumbass…

    “get a life dude…”

Yeah! Sheesh, Ryan! I can’t believe you’re posting notes on someone’s freaking blog, for crying out loud. People are starving and dying by the millions around the world, Britney Spears is TAKEN (oh… my… God!), and I’m outta milk, and you’re worried about the horrors of someone posting a technology-oriented comment on a geek blog? Moron…
